2012 National Umpire Course

5 - 6 May 2012 - ITFM organized the 2012 National Umpire Course in Hillcity Hotel, Ipoh. It was attended by Black Belt members from Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Selangor, Melaka, Penang and Perak, of course. Turnout was less than 50, but it was actually a blessing in disguise as any more participants would mean less space to move in the hall and less attention from the facilitators.

The 2-day course began with a Welcoming Speech by SM Azwan Khoo as the organizer. Without wasting time, the course then continued with Individual Patterns and Sparring judging....with proper Protocol emphasized. Facilitators of the course were known other than the familiar faces at various World Championships....namely SM Tan Chek Si VIII, SM Azwan Khoo VIII, Master Ong Siong Wee VII, Ms Lee Sock Cheng VI & Mr Lee Yu Jin VI.

Then came judging for Power and Special Breaking, Team Patterns & Sparring and last but not least, Self-Defence Routine.

Previous experiences of ITFM Umpire Courses were dry and boring, but not this one. Facilitators did their best to increase the participation of the participants. Participants not only listened, but also got to experience first hand on the judging. And not only that. The facilitators realized that the participants would be returning to their home states to teach their students/juniors what they have learned, so they were given a lot of time practising the techniques. SM Azwan Khoo led the participants in practising basic techniques and patterns.

After the Course, participants were given feedback sheets. I myself wrote 2 pages of feedback. I definitely see improvement in this Course compared to previous ITFM events. Kudos to ITFM! It is hoped that in the future, ITFM will take more aggressive steps in improving the events and the association even further.

Signing off,

National ITF Taekwon-do Technical Training Course 2011

1 - 2 Oct 2011 - ITFM organized a Technical Training Course in Hotel Seri Malaysia, Genting Highlands. Black Belt holders from all over Malaysia attended. Senior Masters Mohd Azwan Khoo, Chan Kum Lau, Tan Eng Kiat, Masters Tony Kang, Johnny Chai and Ong Siong Wee conducted the trainings. All participants had fun and what was new this year was the Senior Black Belt Pattern training by Master Johnny Chai and Free-Sparring training by Senior Master Tan Eng Kiat. ITFM did take note of the feedback last year given to make the trainings more fun and effective. It is hoped that the next one will be even more fun and exciting.

Perak Advance Black Belt Seminar 2011

25 June 2011 - A first of its kind, rare, special and exciting Taekwon-do seminar was held on this day at Paragon City Hotel, Ipoh. The most special fact was that this seminar was headed by not one, but TWO Senior Masters (8th Degree Black Belts). What made it even more special was that the two Senior Masters are pioneers from 2 different countries. They are SM Mohd Azwan Khoo VIII (Chief Instructor & Technical Chairman of International Taekwon-do Federation Malaysia) & SM Kim Sam Dok (Full-time Instructor from DPR Korea). This seminar was a memorable one as many of the participants have been training for many years, but have not trained with a Korean before, despite the fact that Taekwon-do is a Korean martial art.

Approximately 100 Black Belt members gathered in the hall at around 830am for the Masters to arrive. Besides Black Belt members from Perak, participants came from as far as Langkawi, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

The following events took place during the seminar: -

Warming Up by Mr Ravi VI
Patterns Training by SM Azwan VIII
Special Techniques Training by Mr Sitt V
Importance of Proper Execution in Patterns by SM Chan Kum Lau VIII
Fundamental Techniques by SM Kim Sam Dok
Black Belt Patterns by SM Kim Sam Dok
Importance of Affiliation to Government Recognized Association by Master Tony Kang VII
Sparring Training by SM Kim Sam Dok

Everybody learned a great deal from all the trainers and most importantly, had fun and made new friends in the process.

This will be an annual event from now on, and definitely a bigger hall will be needed the next time as the hall was packed with the 100 strong participants.
